The pH, or “potential of Hydrogen” is the scale that measures the relative acidity or alkalinity of a solution. Solutions are measured from zero (totally acid) to fourteen (totally alkaline) and seven is neutral. The optimum blood pH in a healthy body is slightly alkaline and should fall within the narrow range of 7.35 and 7.45.
The human body is made of about 75% water, which is necessary for the transportation of nutrition, oxygen and other important biochemicals. It is important for this water-based medium to be pH balanced. Maintaining this slightly alkaline state is a constant challenge for the body because of all the acid producing foods and beverages we consume. The so called “yummy comfort foods” which we know that it is to some a bit challenging to give up..That refreshing beer, that succulent steak! I have a solution, what if I told you that you can enjoy those foods and still do righteous to your body!Yes!
Understand why it is important to be alkaline:
It is important to understand pH and the role it plays in our overall well being. The tissues and cells of the human body are composed of different chemical elements and are very sensitive to pH balance. Many individuals will spend hundreds of dollars each year on chemicals to keep the pH of their swimming pool maintained, so why not do the same for your body? Your temple! Just as critical, the pH of the body has to be maintained, or we become susceptible to disease and pain.
Understand where acidity comes from:
Most fruits and vegetables have a low pH because of their acid content, so you would think fruits and vegetables would lower your pH,but I have news for you, no!sorry... Fruits and vegetables are broken down during digestion, and once digested most fruits and vegetables raise pH due to their high potassium content. Potassium is highly alkaline forming. Most meat and dairy foods measure as alkaline, but when digested lower pH because of their high protein content. Protein is acid forming. But calcium is alkaline forming, so some dairy products raise pH due to their high calcium and potassium content outweighing their acid forming protein content. Generally, the pH of non foods, like soda and sodium bicarbonate, affect the body the same way they measure for pH.
